Athboy C.S. Trip to Old Trafford

It was a very busy weekend for 47 second year students from Athboy Community School and five intrepid teachers as they travelled on Friday January 22nd via Holyhead to Old Trafford to see the F.A. Premiership match between Manchester United and Southampton the following day. The trip was organised by Woodwork teacher Mr. Jason O’Grady, ably assisted by Mr. Anthony Sheridan, Mr Kevin Murphy, Ms Siún Ní Raghallaigh and Ms Louise Byrne.

After a morning spent in the Trafford Shopping Centre it was time for the Athboy group to head to Old Trafford and their seats in the Stretford End. They were delighted to see the United team take to the field complete with stars such as Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and David DeGea. The game didn’t quite go to plan though with a debut goal for Charlie Austin right at the end seeing the Saints pull of a 1-0 win.

The day was rounded off with a few more hours of retail therapy in the Trafford Centre. The students also got a tour of the state of the art team bus of Southampton F.C. which was parked in their hotel car park.

On the Sunday morning the group travelled back to Old Trafford for a stadium and museum tour. The students got to sit in the United dressing room as well as the dugouts, and visit the bulging trophy room, player’s lounge, press area and tunnel.

The group had a fantastic trip and wish to put on record their thanks to their teachers, especially Mr O’Grady who worked so hard on their behalf to organise and run the trip.
