End of Year Awards and Graduation

Athboy Community School held a very successful Awards Ceremony in the school gymnasium on Tuesday May 22nd to celebrate the academic, curricular and extra-curricular activities that are ongoing in the school.

Each year group was presented with Full Attendance Awards and Student of the Year prizes and various sporting teams were recognised for their progress on the field of play throughout the year.

The First Year awards were presented by Year Head Mr Fox. The Students of the year were chosen on a class basis with Nathan Walker, Angelina Bartosevic, Niamh Mc Namee and Anna Kane being chosen by the teaching staff.

The Second Year prizes were presented by Year Head Ms Connolly also on a class basis with the winners being Lucy Fanning, Eva Melligan, Alina Natyahanchuk, Cephora Miburo, and Veronika Stehlikova

Third Year Head Mr Magner presented Student of the Year prizes to Mya Frazer-Luc, Eoin Kane, Darragh Murtagh and Lionel Swan. The Overall Junior Cert Student of the Year was presented to Katie Wheeler for her contribution to the school community, a very popular and worthy winner. Katie has participated in Irish debates, sat on the Student Council and acted as a Peer Mentor. Mr. Magner also presented a prize to Danny Lawlor to recognise the fact that he did not miss a single day in the three years of Junior Cycle.

Mr. Leavy, Year Head for 5th year, was next on stage to present Student of the Year Awards to Victoria Alake, John Garry, Dylan McCarthy and Orla Mc Loughlin

Year Head for Leaving Cert Applied Miss Mooney presented awards to recognise excellence and effort throughout the year to the LCA1 class. The winners were Fintan Bartley (Work Experience), Amber Flaherty (Gaeilge Chumarsáideach) and the LCA1 Student of the Year is Jordan Gavigan-Forde

Gaisce Award Winners were then presented to the audience by Miss Gallagher as well as various sporting teams that represented the school this year. The Ladies G.A.A. team and Camogie tea were presented with their league medals. Irish Debators Katie Wheeler, James Black and Darragh de Barra were presented with trophies for their excellent progress thorough the rounds of the Gael Linn debates this year. The newly appointed prefects were also announced and presented with their badges. These were Claire Monaghan, Katelyn McKeown, Kate Smith, Grace Halton, Kitty Hamilton, Stephen Dempsey, Darragh Cunningham, Cian Harmon, Kevin Cooke and Daniel Henry.

The focus then moved to Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied Year 2 students. The LCA2 subject Students of the Year were as follows, Jordan Faulkner (I.C.T.), Lauren Murtagh (ICT) Robert Smyth (Maths), Kerrie Halpin (Spanish), Shane Vaughan (Leisure and Recreation), Cialan MacDonnacha (Engineering and Agriculture & Horticulture), Davin Geoghegan (Practical Achievement Task), Angel Ward (English & Communications), Sophie Moore (Hotel/Catering/Tourism), Emma Reid (Work Experience), Sean Darby (Social Education), Nadia Mohammed (Achievement Award). The Overall Leaving Certificate Applied Year 2 Student of the Year is Annie Ryan, recognition for an outstanding year and for her contribution to the school community over her time in Athboy.

The Leaving Cert Subject Awards were presented by Year Head Ms Taite as follows;

Rudi Lee McCarthy (Art), Helena Garry (Accountancy, Irish and Biology), Millie Handley (Religion), Niamh Dunne (English), Martin Browne (Mathematics and DCG), Keith Hennessy (Geography), Daphne Walsh-Whelan (History), Niamh Dunne (French and Business), Amy Lynagh (Agricultural Science and LCVP), Daria Frazcek (German), Natasha Adesanmi (Chemistry), Thomas Griffin (Construction Studies), Oisin Rice (Engineering) Shane Brady (Guidance and Technical Subjects) and Ryan McManus (P.E.).

The Overall Male Sports Personality of the Year is Martin Browne who represented the school with great distinction over the years in the sporting arena, most notably in Hurling. The Overall Female Sports Personality of the Year was presented to Helena Garry who has played gaelic football in particular for the school in each of her five years in Athboy C.S.

The final award to be presented was to the Overall Leaving Cert Student of the Year in Athboy Community School. This is presented to a student who has made a significant contribution to the school community during their time in Athboy C.S. This year the award goes to Keith Hennessy. Keith has always contributed fantastically to the school community with his outstanding academic attainment, good humour, manner and positivity. He received a huge round of applause and is a very deserving and popular winner.

 

The Leaving Cert Graduation Ceremony of Athboy Community School was held on Wednesday 23rd of May last in the school gymnasium. The theme of the ceremony was “Thankful For The Moments”. The celebrant was Rev. Fr. Patrick Donnelly PP of Collinstown/Fore. Some 77 students graduated on the night and a huge crowd of parents, relatives, teachers and pupils gathered for the occasion.

School Chaplain Mr Joe Tynan coordinated the events on the night with help from various members of staff, Prefects and students. The choir was organised and conducted by staff member Angela Corrigan. Principal, Mr Anthony Leavy also addressed the gathering after the mass, as did Year Head Ms Ita Taite while Angel Ward, Thomas Griffin and Natasha Adesanmi represented the students.

Each student was presented with a scroll and a flower to mark their time in the school. The graduation cake was cut by the Leaving Cert Student of the Year Keith Hennessy and the LCA Student of the Year Annie Ryan.

The staff and management of the school would like to wish all of the group the very best in their exams and beyond.
