Junk Kouture in Athboy C.S.

January 26, 2026

By Isobel Canty and Savanagh Reilly

On Thursday January 22nd, the Junk Kouture groups had their competition photoshoot and video shoot. The Junk Kouture module was delivered to TY students by Mr Kington, Ms Monaghan, and Ms King with a total of eighteen students taking part this year. The global youth competition challenges secondary school students to design and create high-fashion couture from 100% recycled materials, promoting creativity, engineering, and sustainability by transforming everyday “junk” into wearable art for runway shows, fostering environmental awareness and circular economy thinking.

Group 1 (Savanagh Reilly, Isobel Canty and Erin Melligan) based their design around plastic in nature, naming their creation ‘ReBloom’, symbolising giving plastic a second chance. They wanted to portray what nature would like if plastic pollution continued the way it is going. They used materials such as Junior Certificate Art examination bags, plastic Shein bags and plastic bottles.

Group 2 (Isabelle O’Rourke, Daniela Ayezuwa and Helena Ni Fhearrchaidh) based their design on war, calling their creation ‘Wings of War. They had features like poppy flowers made of egg cartons, wings made of cardboard and newspaper and a beautiful full skirt made solely out of newspaper.

Big congratulations to all students that took part this year, their hard work and dedication led to amazing and creative fashion designs.
