The school runs an Art Club held at a lunchtime once a week. Everyone interested in drawing, painting, comic books and designing are welcome. The club is run for students, by students to help teach pupils of the school some art skills and to build up an art folder for fun!
Each year a Book Club is established which allows students to chose books they are interested in reading and discussing with others. It is an opportunity for students who share a love of reading to get together and have some quiet time and some discussion around themes they love. It is facilitated by a teacher and/or prefect who are dedicated readers themselves.
It is hoped to hold a Spring Craft Fair yearly in the school. This year’s event took place on Sunday 28th April 2024, organised by this year’s Transition Year Students.
The event, held in the school gymnasium, showcased the talents of local artisans and provided a unique shopping experience for the community. Fantastic vendors filled the schools gym, offering a diverse selection of crafts, including hand-knit scarves, intricately designed jewellery, and beautifully crafted pottery. Each stall brimmed with creativity and skill, reflecting the dedication and passion of the stallholders.
Parents, students, and staff eagerly browsed the stalls, finding one-of-a-kind treasures and perfect gifts for upcoming occasions. The fair not only supports local crafters but also fosters a sense of community and school spirit.
Junk Kouture is a competition open to 13-18 year olds which challenges young people to design and create an outfit from recycled junk. Students are given an opportunity to showcase their design and represent their school on stages across Ireland and the world.
Here at Athboy CS we run a Junk Kouture module for TY students. It is a great opportunity for students who love fashion, design, modelling and dancing to showcase their talent while also learning other important life skills such as working in groups, compromising and meeting deadlines.
This year’s musical, The Adams Family, was staged from January 23rd to 27th 2024. The cast was drawn from TY and 5th year. It was a spectacular show and got rave reviews.
The Addams Family is a musical comedy and is based upon a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. As we have witnessed over the years being in a musical can be a life-changing experience for a student and has a significant impact on positive wellbeing. Students come out of a musical with a great sense of achievement and belonging.
Our school prayer space is located beside Ms. Halligans office on the pastoral care wing of the school. This reflective space was designed to offer a peaceful area to the members of our school community where students and staff can go to spend some quiet time reflecting or praying.
In it you will find music playing, soft lighting and written reflections and meditations to follow if you so wish.
The room is open to and used by the wider school community with lunch times allocated to exams years for meditation.
All are welcome
At Athboy Community School, our library provides an excellent facility for reading and quiet study during lunchtime each day. The library holds a large catalogue of books from fiction, to non-fiction, sport, history, autobiographies and bilingual novels. There are computers available to students for research and project work. Our library hosts a number of initiatives throughout the year to increase the literacy skills of our students.
The Science Department organise a trip to Belgium each year, normally offered to second year students. The trip involves a trip to science based activities like the Euro Space centre in Transinne, the Atomium in Brussels, Technopolis Science Park in Mechelen and other attractions.
While there over the years the students have been brought to places cities Cologne, Leuven, Maastricht or Brussels to enjoy a touch of European culture as well as theme parks in the region for some well-earned fun. The trip has always been a very popular one and has ran well for many years in the school.
Our Transition Year students go on an international trip each year and in 2024 went to Lake Garda in Italy.
Business students got to go to Berlin this year also and had a wonderful time taking in all of the sights.
