Athboy C.S held their annual Sports Day on Thursday May 14th with a great variety of events and activities throughout the morning and afternoon. The day was organised by the Sports Council in the school run by Miss Fitzgerald, and by Mr. Williams and Mr O’Dowd. All the tutors in the school stayed with their classes for the day and other teachers ran the various events, the scoreboard and table quiz, with Miss Mooney organising the medals.
Each Year competed for prizes in their home class group, and completed a roster of five one-hour segments of events. In every event three points was awarded to the winning class in each year, two points for second and one point for third.
Out on the pitches there was a 60 metre dash, a hurdle race, team-building events, a penalty shoot-out competition and a lemon and spoon race.
The second group of activities on the pitches consisted of a relay welly race, a wheelbarrow race, a tug of war competition, a three-legged race and a sack race.
On the outdoor courts there was a wet water race, basketball free throw competition, fit skip, a bean-bag throwing competition and a bike relay.
Inside, in the school gymnasium there was an obstacle course race, and in the gym suite there was a Just Dance competition. This section of events also included an inflatable assault course, a bungee run on the inflatables, inflatable football darts and an inflatable Donkey Derby on the soccer pitch.
In the last hour of the day, a big awards ceremony was held in the school’s GPA where the winning classes in each year were announced. This was the result of all the points in each event throughout the day being collated. The winning 1st year class was Patten. In 2nd year, Baily were the winners. The 3rd year winning class was Brigid. The Transition Years, 5th years and LCA1 class competed together, and the winning class was 5th year Navy. In Leaving Cert and LCA2, the winning class was Trinity. Each winning class got a goodie bag for each person. Lastly, gold medals were awarded to each member of the Sportiest Class in the school, the class that had accumulated more points than anyone else. This prize went to 2nd Year Baily.
A big thank you to all the staff who helped organise and run the events and all the students who competed in what was a hugely successful Sports Day.
