By Erin Melligan, 5th Year.
On Thursday 22nd of October, Nenyasha Maticha, Isobel Canty, Eabha Smith, Tom Darcy and Erin Melligan headed off to the Ardboyne Hotel in Navan for the annual Comhairle na nÓg conference to represent Athboy Community School.
The morning started with all delegates being split into different tables, so we got to speak with new people from different schools across County Meath. We started with speeches from members of the Comhairle na nÓg Council about what they did during the year, and what action they took as a council to help alleviate school stress for students.
Then the session began with icebreakers, after which we had discussions with Meath County Council members and other influential decision-makers in the county, asking them questions and giving them feedback about improvements that can be made in our local areas.
It was interesting to see the varied perspectives from students from all over Meath, because every person had a different view on how changes can be made in their area. After this, we all worked together in our table to discuss different problems that young people face under different categories, which were Youth Voice, Community Safety and Road Safety. We also discussed how changes can be implemented in these areas and how the Comhairle na nÓg council can help.
After this activity we had lunch, and after there was a small presentation for the outgoing members of Comhairle na nÓg, Then it was time for the voting of new members for each school in attendance at the conference. The Athboy C.S. students that attended the conference nominated Nenyasha Maticha and Eabha Smith to be the representatives for our school in the Comhairle na nÓg Council. Congratulations to Nenyascha and Eabha on their new position.
