Erin and Isobel on Patrol

An Garda Síochána TY Work Experience.

Last week, 6-9th October, Isobel Canty and Erin Melligan (TY) got to go for work experience with An Garda Síochána. The girls placement was in Kells and from there they went to Athlumney House in Navan, the Criminal Courts of Justice, Wheatfield Prison and then Westmanstown for the Operational Support Services Day.  

Isobel and Erin got a talk from the Continuous Professional Development team at Athlumney House, they also got to study scenes of crime and talk to the undercover drug unit for Meath.  

On Tuesday the girls arrived at the Criminal Courts of Justice where they got to sit in on various different trials, had a tour of the underground cells and had an informed talk from the sergeant at the criminal courts.  

On the Wednesday the girls had a trip to Wheatfield Prison in Dublin where they got a tour of the prison and had the chance to see the cells, the workshops and a chance to talk to some prisoners. The girls also got a talk from the Governor of the prison. 

On their final day, Erin and Isobel went to Westmanstown for the Operational Support Services day. The Operational Support Services consist of units that provide specialist support to Gardaí. The units include the mounted support unit, the air support unit, the dog support unit and the water support unit. 

Overall, the two girls really enjoyed the four days and got to see various job possibilities and opportunities for the future.
