ACS 1st and 2nd year Girls Basketballers Kick-Start Their Seasons. – Pics

By Padraig Englishby, TY

2nd Years: Athboy CS 32-8 Beaufort College

2nd year Girls Basketball travelled to Beaufort College for league opener on Wednesday. A great showing from ACS reflected in a final score of 32-8 in a game that will give the girls major confidence for rest of the league campaign.

1st and 2nd year Girls Basketball teams both faced Royal Cavan at home on Wednesday in a double header that didn’t disappoint!

1st Years: Royal Cavan 18-16 Athboy CS

The first game was a story of two halves. Royal Cavan started the first half strongest dominating the first two quarters. With a 10-2 deficit coming into half-time, it seemed like our girls had a mountain to climb. But Coach, Mr.Mahon seemed to settle the girls going into the 3rd quarter, turning the deficit around with the sides tied going into the fourth. The shooting saw a drastic improvement especially, with many excellent shots from Lily Mai Hickey and Janine Nicol. Unfortunately, Cavan had that fire in them as well, as they were able to hold off the Athboy momentum shift, with a final score of 18-16. An excellent performance from our first year girls!

Second Years: Royal Cavan 26-22 Athboy CS

The second game was almost the complete opposite of the first year clash. Athboy came out of the gates flying, taking a 10-2 lead in the 1st, before Cavan came back to lead 16-10 at half time.

Athboy mounted a strong comeback of their own to tie it in the 4th at 20 points each and take the lead at the start of the last quarter from a few scores by Sheila Croal and Katie Lynch. But unfortunately, that would be the last time Athboy would score as they would end up falling to a 26-22 defeat as the clock ran out.

Congratualtions to Mr.Mahon and all the girls that took part in two very competitive league fixtures. They put on a great show for all of us.

Athboy CS 1st and 2nd years close out the group phase v Colaiste na Mi away next Wednesday to play for a place in the Quarter finals after the mid-term break. Best of luck to all the girls involved.
