The future of soccer is sure to be healthy in Athboy Community School with five first year girls and three first year boys called up to play for their North-Eastern Regional League (NERL) in the Gaynor Cup and Kennedy Cup this summer.
Emily Donnelly (centre half) and Lucy Donnelly (central attacking midfield), Angie Nicol (central defensive midfield) and Janine Nicol (striker) and Lily–Mai Hickey (centre-half) have been called up into the NERL squad for the Gaynor Cup, an incredible honour for the girls who will make up a quarter of the 20 player squad!
In addition, Cayden Shaw, Kai Flynn and Jamie Bell, (all forwards) have been called up to play in the Kennedy Cup for the NERL, a similarly massive honour for the boys.
The Gaynor (for girls) and Kennedy (for boys) Cups are organised by the F.A.I. Schools section and are competed for by representative teams from all over the island of Ireland at u-14 level. It is held every summer in the University of Limerick.
Congratulations to all these budding soccer stars from everyone in Athboy Community School
