John Lonergan Talk for TY’s

March 27, 2026

By Sophie Malone, TY

On Thursday the 26th of March, the TY students gathered in the Demo Room for a talk from former Governor of Mountjoy prison Mr. John Lonergan who had worked in that position for over 22 years and was 42 years in the Irish Prison Service.

Mr. Lonergan started off by explaining how most people in prison were there because of how they made one bad choice that changed their lives. He explained that a huge percentage of people in prison were there because of drug related crimes, either directly or indirectly.

The rest of the talk focused on drugs and addiction, and how one bad decision to even take a small amount of drugs could eventually lead to in prison. He also talked about peer pressure from friends and how free drugs from dealers are never really free, as you can get yourself into drug debt very easily which is very dangerous.

The talk was very interesting and thought provoking and the students would like to extend their thanks to Mr. Lonergan for coming to the school to talk to the TY Students.
