Maths Week Riddle #3

In yesterday’s riddle we asked:

Four people need to cross a bridge at night with one torch. They all walk at different speeds- 1,2,7 and 10mins – and only two can cross at a time. When two cross they must move at the slower person’s pace. The torch must always be carried across. What is the minimum time needed for everyone to cross safely?

The answer was… 17minutes.

Solution:

The 1-minute and 2-minute people cross first 2 minutes elapsed
The 1-minute person returns with the torch 3 minutes total
The 7-minute and 10-minute people cross together 13 minutes total
The 2-minute person returns with the torch 15 minutes total
Finally, the 1-minute and 2-minute people cross again 17 minutes total

Now it’s time for Maths Week Riddle #3
