On Thursday the 23rd of October, the student body of Athboy Community School was invited to dress up to celebrate Halloween before the Mid-Term Break. Wearing a costume cost 1, collected by Student Council Treasurer Savanagh Reilly, Helena Ni Fhearrchaidh and Samantha Taylor at the entrance. All the money earned went to Jigsaw, an Irish charity for young people’s mental health. Through this, the school raised 314.28.

The theme for the costumes was musicals, with an emphasis on Grease, but students were also allowed to wear their own unique and spooky attire! Many students embraced their creativity, putting hard work into their costumes and makeup. To acknowledge these efforts and celebrate them, the Student Council in the school gave out awards to the best costumes in each year during lunch. Student Council Reps Liam Fenton, Samantha Taylor, Saoirse Meagher and Savanagh Reilly acted as judges.

In first year group, third place went to Tom Gethin, second went to Kitty Naulty and the joint winners were Daisy Duffy and Katarina Szaboova.

In second year, Aimee Brady, Chloe O’Connor and Annie-Mai Ludlow all took third place, Jacob Sweeney got second place and Alex McEntee made first!

In third year, Blathnaid Walsh took third spot, Cian Ryan got second and the “Best Dressed” was Ruby Gethin.

In the next round, Transition Year, fifth year and LCA1 all combined to make a big group. Out of them, Sean Quigley came third, Helena Ni Fhearrchaidh placed second, and Sophie Gibbons earned first place with her impressive special effects make up!

The sixth years and LCA2 were grouped together, and third place went to Rachel Long, Shane Carroll came second and Billy Bowman was declared “Best Dressed”

The teachers also joined in on the fun too, dressing up in an array of spooky or funny costumes. The judges awarded Mr McKeown third place, Mr Kington came second, and two were awarded as joint “Best Dressed”- Mr Moran and MissGillic!

Overall the day was success, everyone had lots of fun and the school raised lots of money. Through the generosity and enthusiasm of our students and staff, the event supported such an important cause in Jigsaw. The Student Council and the whole school community are proud to have contributed to an organisation that provides vital support to young people’s mental health.
