Athboy 8-6 Longwood 0-14

Athboy Community School’s second year footballers etched their names into the history books with a remarkable victory over Longwood in the 2nd Year North Leinster Final today. Played in bitterly cold and wet conditions, the match was relocated to the astro pitch in Dunganny, but the change in venue did little to dampen the intensity or quality of the contest.

Athboy C.S. burst out of the blocks, setting the tone early and racing into a three-point lead with confident, attacking football. Their sharp movement and clinical finishing put Longwood under immediate pressure. However, Longwood responded in kind, demonstrating their quality and resilience by battling back to take the lead midway through the first half.

At a crucial stage, Athboy found themselves under sustained pressure, and it was goalkeeper and joint captain Luke Coyne who rose to the occasion, producing a series of outstanding saves keeping his side firmly in the contest. His leadership and composure proved vital, as without those interventions, the game could easily have slipped away.

Inspired by this resistance, Athboy surged forward once more. A well-taken goal shifted momentum, and they quickly followed it up with a second, reclaiming the lead heading into halftime. That double strike gave Athboy renewed confidence and a firm foothold in the match.

The second half belonged to Athboy C.S. Displaying excellent teamwork, discipline, and attacking flair, they took control of proceedings and never allowed Longwood back into contention. Wave after wave of attacks resulted in a series of superbly worked goals, showcasing the team’s skill and determination. By the final whistle, Athboy had racked up an incredible eight goals in a dominant display.

As the game concluded, scenes of joy erupted. Joint captains Luke Coyne and Callan Shaw proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of the school, marking a historic achievement for the team. Their success is a testament to their hard work, resilience, and unity throughout the campaign. A truly memorable day for Athboy CS, and one that will be celebrated for years to come.
