Junior Girls Football

The Junior Girls Gaelic Football team, coached by Ms. Frazer and Ms. McGovern, played a very strong Leixlip side last Friday.

Leixlip got some early scores to put themselves ahead in the first half. The Athboy girls tackled at every chance, with some great hassling from Emily and Lucy Donnelly. The backs worked extremely hard, with Sheila Croal and Lily –Mai Hickey thwarting Leixlip’s goal attempts. Towards the end of the first half the Athboy girls started to get on top of the Leixlip side with two amazing goals from Janine Nicol and Katie Lynch.

The girls gave it 110% in the second half. There were some great saves from goalie Caoimhe Heaney, and the backs did a super job at keeping the ball away from the goals. The Leixlip scores were few in the second half with only a few points.

There was some great running from Angie Nicol, Ava Watson, Áine Meagher and Maria Muldoon. Janine Nicol scored a superb goal which brought the girls up to 3 goals and 1 point. Amy Mooney scored two goals in quick succession in the second half and Janine Nicol scored a point in the last 15 minutes of the match. The girls worked extremely hard and gave it their all.

Unfortunately, the scores Leixlip got in the first half kept them on top with the full time score 5-13 to 5-2. Well done to the girls for all their hard work. This certainly won’t be the last we see of them.
