An Exciting Engineers week School Trip: Engineering and Traditional Blacksmithing

Athboy Community school 1st year engineering students embarked on an unforgettable school trip that combined modern engineering with ancient craftsmanship. The journey began early in the morning as we set off towards Turmec Engineering, an industry leader in engineering waste management solutions. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Turmec staff and Sam Black and Debbie McMahon, former students of our school who now work at Turmec. Debbie gave an engaging presentation about her career journey, the company’s work, and the importance of engineering in today’s world. Following the presentation, we were taken on a guided tour of the complex, where we saw firsthand how innovative machinery is designed and manufactured. It was a fascinating experience that gave us a glimpse into the world of modern engineering.

After our time at Turmec, we continued our journey to meet the award-winning blacksmith known as An Gobha. This visit transported us back in time to the Iron Age, as we experienced the traditional art of metal forging. An Gobha, also known as the Blacksmith of the Boyne Valley, demonstrated age-old techniques used to craft intricate ironworks. Watching him skillfully shape molten metal with precision and expertise was truly mesmerizing. We even had the opportunity to try our hand at some basic forging techniques, making this part of the trip both educational and interactive.

With our minds filled with new knowledge and appreciation for both modern and traditional craftsmanship, we made our way back to school. The day was an incredible blend of past and present, highlighting the evolution of metalwork from the Iron Age to modern industry. This school trip not only broadened our understanding of engineering and blacksmithing but also left us with lasting memories of an inspiring and educational adventure.
