Maths Week: What is a Growth Mindset & Why does it matter in Maths?
A growth mindset helps students see challenges as opportunities and mistakes as valuable parts of the learning process. With this mindset, students understand that their ability isn’t fixed — it grows with effort and practice. It’s the difference between thinking “I can get better if I try” and “I’m just not good at this.”
This week, we’re encouraging everyone to embrace a growth mindset by using positive maths language. Phrases like “I can’t do this yet” and “This will take time” help build confidence, resilience, and a love of learning.
Parents play an important role too. While you can’t change your own school experience, you can strongly influence how your child feels about maths. Research shows that a child’s attitude toward maths — positive or negative — has a real impact on how well they perform.
Together, let’s help every student see that everyone can get better at maths with effort, practice, and perseverance!
