Some of our students in Athboy C.S. were lucky enough to have a half-time kickabout at Dalymount Park at the recent Women’s Premier Division game between Bohemians and Peamount United.
The girls were in Phibsborough as guests of Bohemian F.C. with their clubmates, as the under 11 and under 12 Athboy Celtic girls teams featured in the half-time game,
But the more senior girls rolled up their sleeves to take on ball retriever duties and had their own kickabout at half time on the same pitch where Irish Internationals were played up until 1990, and that was once graced by Pele and Zinedine Zidane – not to mention the likes of Bob Marley, Thin Lizzy and Red Hot Chili Peppers who played gigs there. over the years.
The stadium opened in 1901 and after 125 years is to close for a multi-million euro rebuild, so this was one of the last kickabouts to be played at the famous old ground! Well done girls!
