My name is Kaitlyn Gallagher from the Class of 2025 and I’m studying History and English in DCU. The name of my course is a Bachelor of Arts, which offers new new modules each semester. In history my favourite modules I’ve studied so far would be Irish History and the Uses and Abuses of History. In English I’ve covered so many aspects such as poetry, drama, film studies and novels. In my final year of secondary school, I was set on teaching as a career, however I was unsure if I wanted to do primary or secondary teaching. By choosing this course, it gave me the opportunity to prepare for both, and further time to consider which I wanted to pursue. I have now decided, having nearly completed my first year of college, that post-primary teaching is the route I want to take. In secondary school I loved English and always found it very interesting. I especially enjoyed the creative aspect of the subject which prepared me well for the type of assignments and modes of expression I have studied in college. History of course, is very much factual and I always had an interest in it. I really enjoyed my time in Athboy Community school, and now I am loving the college experience, even though it’s so very different to secondary school life. I love my course as I’m studying two subjects I have an interest in, which makes the learning so rewarding.

Hello, my name is Joy Nderitu and I graduated from Athboy Community School in 2015. During my time in the school, I particularly enjoyed English and Geography, as they broadened my understanding of the world and highlighted the importance of effective communication. Following this, I completed a one-year PLC in Media and Public Relations at Rathmines Community College. This experience sparked my passion for the media industry and led me to pursue a degree in Journalism at Dublin City University. While studying at Rathmines Community College, I was eager to gain hands-on experience and proactively sought opportunities to get my foot in the door. I successfully secured a placement with Sky Sports, where I learned from experienced researchers and journalists and gained valuable insights into the fast paced, crazy, and dynamic world of media. After graduating from Dublin City University, I relocated to Sydney, Australia, where I worked for a few years as a Senior Marketing Coordinator with the Property Council of Australia. It was here that my passion for marketing grew, as I developed a strong understanding of building brand identity, managing crisis communications, and delivering effective campaigns. Looking back, my time in secondary school helped me develop key skills such as researching, meeting deadlines, and maintaining consistency in my work. Skills that have been essential throughout my academic and professional journey. Pursuing a career in marketing and media can be incredibly rewarding, particularly when it involves creating meaningful content and contributing to a strong and impactful brand.

My name is Eoin Kelleher from the Class of 2025 and I am studying Business and Accounting in Maynooth University. My course includes several accounting modules, economics modules, and different business skills modules. I am really enjoying this and that aspect of individual learning and continuous assessments throughout the semester. I'd like it to lead to a potential accounting job or progressing to take on the family business, while also I’m hoping to complete a post graduate degree in Business. Secondary school prepared me mainly through having done TY. I feel like that year really helped me mature and grow as a person which has really shone through and benefitted me now. The support, help and relationships built with my teachers throughout the years in Athboy really helped me grow too, and I will always be grateful for that.

My name is Anastasiia Volkova, and I’m currently studying Architecture at Technological University Dublin, Bolton Street. We have modules like Building Technology, Structures, History and Criticism, but the main part of it is the design and drawing studios. What is architecture? At first, it might seem to be about designing nice-looking buildings or cool facades. It’s not. It’s so much more than that. It’s about people. It’s about how spaces make people feel, how they live, and how they interact. It’s about respecting the culture and history of a place. Architecture isn’t really about the building - it’s about the people who are going to use it every day. For me, architecture is a way to show how I see the world; Your take, your ideas, your vision, and somehow turn them into something real that other people can experience. We also get to travel. Every year, there are college trips to different countries. I went to Porto in Portugal this year, and it was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. Is it intense? -Yes, very. There are stressful moments, long nights, and times when you question your concepts. But would I ever change my career choice? -Never. Not even for a second. Looking back, secondary school helped me in lots of different ways. Subjects like DCG, Construction, Art, Engineering, and Physics were really useful to prepare me. My biggest advice to you is simple: don’t be afraid to try something. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. If you enjoy something -go for it.
