What Our Students Say

  • Joy Nderitu

Hello, my name is Joy Nderitu and I graduated from Athboy Community School in 2015. During my time in the school, I particularly enjoyed English and Geography, as they broadened my understanding of the world and highlighted the importance of effective communication. Following this, I completed a one-year PLC in Media and Public Relations at Rathmines Community College. This experience sparked my passion for the media industry and led me to pursue a degree in Journalism at Dublin City University. While studying at Rathmines Community College, I was eager to gain hands-on experience and proactively sought opportunities to get my foot in the door. I successfully secured a placement with Sky Sports, where I learned from experienced researchers and journalists and gained valuable insights into the fast paced, crazy, and dynamic world of media. After graduating from Dublin City University, I relocated to Sydney, Australia, where I worked for a few years as a Senior Marketing Coordinator with the Property Council of Australia. It was here that my passion for marketing grew, as I developed a strong understanding of building brand identity, managing crisis communications, and delivering effective campaigns. Looking back, my time in secondary school helped me develop key skills such as researching, meeting deadlines, and maintaining consistency in my work. Skills that have been essential throughout my academic and professional journey. Pursuing a career in marketing and media can be incredibly rewarding, particularly when it involves creating meaningful content and contributing to a strong and impactful brand.

  • Eoin Kelleher

My name is Eoin Kelleher from the Class of 2025 and I am studying Business and Accounting in Maynooth University. My course includes several accounting modules, economics modules, and different business skills modules. I am really enjoying this and that aspect of individual learning and continuous assessments throughout the semester. I'd like it to lead to a potential accounting job or progressing to take on the family business, while also I’m hoping to complete a post graduate degree in Business. Secondary school prepared me mainly through having done TY. I feel like that year really helped me mature and grow as a person which has really shone through and benefitted me now. The support, help and relationships built with my teachers throughout the years in Athboy really helped me grow too, and I will always be grateful for that.

  • Anastasiia Volkova

My name is Anastasiia Volkova, and I’m currently studying Architecture at Technological University Dublin, Bolton Street. We have modules like Building Technology, Structures, History and Criticism, but the main part of it is the design and drawing studios. What is architecture? At first, it might seem to be about designing nice-looking buildings or cool facades. It’s not. It’s so much more than that. It’s about people. It’s about how spaces make people feel, how they live, and how they interact. It’s about respecting the culture and history of a place. Architecture isn’t really about the building - it’s about the people who are going to use it every day. For me, architecture is a way to show how I see the world; Your take, your ideas, your vision, and somehow turn them into something real that other people can experience. We also get to travel. Every year, there are college trips to different countries. I went to Porto in Portugal this year, and it was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life. Is it intense? -Yes, very. There are stressful moments, long nights, and times when you question your concepts. But would I ever change my career choice? -Never. Not even for a second. Looking back, secondary school helped me in lots of different ways. Subjects like DCG, Construction, Art, Engineering, and Physics were really useful to prepare me. My biggest advice to you is simple: don’t be afraid to try something. Don’t be afraid to express yourself. If you enjoy something -go for it.

  • Adam Kearney – U.C.D.

I am Adam Kearney, a past student of Athboy Community School. I completed the Leaving Certificate in 2025. I am now in University College Dublin studying Economics and Philosophy. Secondary school prepared me for college by giving me time management skills, organisation and planning skills. The emphasis on group work in Athboy developed my teamwork and communication skills to a high level. These skills are important in college so as to be able to work on projects with peers, attend public speaking events, as well as communicating with professors and faculty. In college, I’ve had modules including Macroeconomics, Criminal Procedure, Neuroscience, critical thinking, Ethics, Modern Philosophy, and an introduction to Economics, just to name a few. I’ve had the opportunity to attend masterclasses in other subject areas such as sales, law, and Business. I am a real advocate of UCD as a place to study. I have developed so many lasting relationships and connections from college that have really been impactful. Joining societies and sports clubs has given me new experiences and new perspectives. I am hopeful of receiving both Social Science academic awards and a first-class honours degree. With this, I aim to further my education in Economics and pursue a Master's at UCD. One thing I know is that working hard at what you do and putting yourself out there are the main things that gave me the biggest chance of success in Athboy C.S., as well as now in college.
