‘Poor’ – Livestreaming Event

March 26, 2026

By Megan Broughill, TY.

The TY students in Athboy Community School gathered together in the school’s demo room on Wednesday the 25th to watch a livestream performance of ‘Poor’ by Katriona O’Sullivan, adapted by Sonya Kelly and performed at the Gate Theatre. Special thanks go to Ms Mahoney and Padraig Englishby for assisting and handling the technological side throughout!

The TY’s began reading Poor just after the Christmas break as their class novel. With the book being introduced to the school for the first time this year, the TY class of 25/26 are the first group to experience it. The powerful and insightful story opened their eyes to how addiction and financial hardship can deeply affect a person’s life, making them reflect on how quickly circumstances can change.

The play itself was extremely inspiring. Katriona was portrayed both as an adult, played by Aisling O’Mara, and as a child, played by Hollie Lawlor. The production was thoughtfully arranged, making it feel even more authentic than expected.

Overall, the TY students felt truly inspired and the experience showed them that even though a story may be written in a book, its reality and impact can be very real.
